However, major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara can easily accept USD, AUD, Pound Sterling, Euro and Indian Currency( Rupee). But in case of remote villages and other countryside in Nepal, Nepali currency is preferred. Tourists can enjoy the food they wish to have while they are in major cities like Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara, Nagarkot, Butwal and Biratnagar. But, if they go to the mountain areas for trekking, hiking, climbing and any other adventure activities, they have to depend on certain items of foods like especially Nepali, some continental, Chinese and Indian. The local guesthouse, teahouses and hotels offer them these foods as mentioned in their food menu.

Nepali Daal Bhat is very popular in Nepal. It can be enjoyed with curry, pickle and meat items. You can have this item wherever you go because Daal Bhat is staple food in Nepal. Interestingly, you can see the slogan highlighting the Daal Bhat, ‘ Daal Bhat Power, 24 Hour’ on the trekking trails like Everest Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Manaslu Circuit Trek and many other trekking trails. Most of the travelers love having Nepali Daal Bhat during their stay in Nepal. 

You can also carry some light foodstuffs for you in case you go starved in the mountain and cities. But carrying heavy foodstuffs in the mountain will be burdensome for you and for your porters who carry your luggage. So, it is recommended to carry only some light snacks like toffees, chocolates, candies and some dry and light snacks like dry meat. In summary, local home-stays, lodges, guesthouses, hotels  and resorts are the main sources of foods in Nepal. 

2. Accommodation 

Accommodation in Nepal ranges from ordinary homestays, local teahouses/lodges to luxury star hotels.

 if you are travelling in the developed cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, you can easily get the accommodation you want. But, if you are going for trekking/hiking/climbing/mountaineering, then, you have to depend on local lodges, teahouses and hotels run by local people. If you are doing a climbing or mountaineering, then, you have to spend the nights in tents. So, accommodation varies as per your trip type. 

The accommodation in cities in hotels will be very fine and cozy while you will not get such type accommodation in mountain areas. There will very basic accommodation in homestays, local lodges, and guesthouses. However, the accommodation will be fine enough to spend a couples of nights. The accommodation during the trekking/hiking in the mountain will be twin sharing basis and the toilets will not be attached; it will be outside of the room and will be sharing basis. So, get mentally ready to use the toilet on sharing basis and the room as well. You can get a separate accommodation but needs to pay supplementary cost during the trekking in Nepal in the mountain. For this you have to make a prior request to the trip operator. 

The accommodation in Nepal especially in the mountain will be crowded and packed in the peaks trekking season like Autumn (Sep-Nov). You may not get the accommodation you want easily on time since a large number of people make request for reservation of accommodation. It means, you need to prepare for this as well for the inconvenience of accommodation during Autumn in the mountain, on the trekking trails. 

5: Health and Securities

Both health and securities are invaluable things to know before departing on a vacation trip. What are the health and securities issues and how are the health and securities conditions in Nepal or what health and securities may occur on the trail while trekking in Nepal? Maybe, these are some of the important things to know before going Nepal for a particular trip. So, now let’s see these health and security issues in detail.

1: Health 

One needs to prepare well for their health first, however, the health facilities on the vacation/trip matters a lot. While travelling in Nepal, one can find all the health facilities including cure of acute mountain sickness and major surgeries in major cities like Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, Biratnagar, Janakpur and Hetauda. 

Health services in Nepal are relatively cheaper and prompt than in other countries. But, the individual has to bear all expenses of health services including medicines. No government pay for the health services of the people. Some insurance companies insure people and pay only some amount of health expenses. 


The government of Nepal has newly introduced SSF ( Social Security Fund) which covers some medical expenses. But, not all people are involved in it. 

2: What happens if you get sick on the trekking/hiking/climbing/mountaineering trail?

If you are sick on the trail, you will be treated with some basic medicines carried by the team leader. You will be given right food stuffs in the mountain to prevent and cure such kind of illnesses like acute mountain sickness. If the problem persists, then, you will immediately be evacuated by helicopter or jeep or car whatever is possible and admitted to the nearby hospital for the further treatment. For this, you have to have a full-fledged travel insurance document. It means, travelers travelling in Nepal don’t need to worry much about health conditions.

The major health issues while people travelling in Nepal may be dengue fever, malaria, snakebite ( in Terai belt) , diarrhea , tummy problems, headache and mild fever. For this you can prepare your own first aid kit with required medicine for your travel. 

To prevent such kind of health issues including high altitude sickness, you are suggested to have fresh food items, drink boiled or purified water, protect yourself from mosquitoes and snakes and do regular exercises like yoga and meditation. Don’t eat in chaos. 

Still, the rural parts of Nepal is deprived of good and accessible health services and health service centers. 

3: Securities 

Nepal is safe destination for travelers. Though many countries went and still going in violence, Nepal is not in violence and conflict right now. Previously, Nepal went through 10 years people’s war between Maoist and the government of Nepal and Nepal is republic country and has promulgated new constitution. There is no any kind of violence in Nepal and no such kind of threats for the people who are travelling. 

Although Nepal is a multicultural, multiethnic and multireligious state, it has not gone through any religious and ethnic violence so far. Therefore, while travelling in Nepal, foreign travelers don’t need to panic about their securities. They are all safe and secure.  In the major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, tourists securities are handled and controlled by tourist police and it will be handled by Nepal police and Nepal Army or Armed Police Force.
