Normally, the lodges/teahouses/hotels and guesthouses are made up of woods and rocks and are run by local people. But, one important thing to carry during your trip in the mountain is your private sleeping bag which will make your nights more comfortable in the mountain at higher elevation and you can easily battle chilling cold nights and make your body warm.

It is very rare that you get suite room as your accommodation in the mountain. The toilets are detached from the bedrooms and you should be ready share the toilet with other trekkers in the mountain. If you go Annapurna Base Camp in Spring, you will enjoy magnificent rhododendron flowering in different seven colors which entirely blankets the Annapurna Base Camp Trekking Trail till Deurali (3200m).

The steep walk of Jhino Danda initially seems to be very challenging to climb up Chhomrong for at least 3 hours. This tiring walk really makes the trekkers who are doing Annapurna Base Camp Trek almost hopeless but rest of the trails is less challenging and less strenuous.

The Annapurna Base Camp Trekking Trail after Deurali is less strenuous and less steep while ascending to Machhapuchhre Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp. However, due to high elevation above 3500m, one may feel little difficult in pacing and breathing. Go slowly taking a long deep breath while ascending from Machhapuchhre Base Camp(3700m) to Annapurna Base Camp (4130m).

The Annapurna Base Camp Trekking Trails passes through Jhino Danda, Chhomrong, Sinuwa, Bamboo, Himalaya, Deurali, Machhapuchhre Base Camp before ascending to the final destination, Annapurna Base Camp.

While backtracking, the trekkers will use the same trails as they did before and end the Annapurna Base Camp Trek at Jhino Danda where they can have a sweet and relaxing taste of natural springs.

Overall, the ascents and docents are equal in distance and hours that one has to encounter. The steepest among them is Jhino Danda ascent to Chhomrong village if you are beginning from Jhino Danda. Alternatively, you can combine Ghorepani-Poonhill Trek with Annapurna Base Camp Trek. IF you go with ABC Trek with Poonhill, you don’t need to encounter this steep ascent from the base of the Jhino Danda. You will have flat trail directly going to Chhomrong from Tadapani.

Important Note

It is very important to consider whether to go with bus ride to Pokhara from Kathmandu and back or by air. If you have an important schedule and important thing to do right after and before your Annapurna Base Camp Trek, it is recommended to go with domestic flight to and from Pokhara. Another big issue will be the issue of heavy traffic on Prithvi Highway and the 6 hours drive from and to Pokhara may prolong like 10-12 hours sometimes.  Again, if you have travel sickness, please try your best to escape this 6-8 hours drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara and back.

Another important thing to consider is that if you are completely beginner and learning to hike for 3-4 hours in a day covering less than 7 kilometers, please, don’t try to go Annapurna Base Camp which is located at 4130m above the sea level. One requires good level of stamina, confidence and preparations for Annapurna Base Camp. Make sure that you have packed all required trekking gears and can walk at least 7 hours a day covering 10-12 kilometers distance in average in a day, then only, go for Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

Make your Annapurna Base Camp Trek either in Spring ( Mar-May) or in Autumn( Sep-Nov).

  • If you have the symptoms of acute mountain sickness and if it gets sever, try to walk down to lower elevations and apply first aid procedures.

What I like most about the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

Personally, what like most about Annapurna Base Camp Trek is stepping at Annapurna Base Camp and capturing giant Annapurna South and alluring Machhapuchhre. Along with  this, one can enjoy the walk through Annapurna Conservation Area with diverse species of flora and fauna. Moreover, trekkers will find Pokhara city as paradise for relaxation and refreshment. The final and the most important thing in Annapurna Base Camp Trek is the natural hot springs of Jhinu Danda where trekkers  can release all weariness and exhaustion at the end of the trek by dipping their bodies into the natural hot water at the bank of Modi River.

Tipping for Guide and Porter

Tipping for your guide and porter is not mandatory but they expect something extra from you after they work hard for you. Isn’t it? You’d better prepare USD 5-10 per day per individual guide and porter. But, it doesn’t mean that you have to do the same as we recommend you. You reward them with some handsome tipping as well if you are fully satisfied. Sometimes, you don’t need to reward them with tipping if they don’t take a good care of you and try to spoil your trip with some unnecessary personal benefits and interests. Nevertheless, tipping ( little or more) seems to be mandatory in present world while doing a vacation trip.

When preparing for a trekking trip in Nepal,  it's essential to have the right equipment and packing list to ensure your safety and comfort to complete your mission. You will need to pack smart and light. This packing list doesn’t mean you need to pack everything listed here. This list is a guideline, and your final list will depend on your preferences and judgment as well as your tour destination and season. Follow as per your personal needs and preferences by taking this as a reference. Here’s a comprehensive list of items you should consider:

Trekking Clothing

Headwear:
  • Sun Hat/Cap for sun protection: A Sun hat protects the face from the strong rays of the sun. Carry a lightweight hat that can be easily packed. Or A wide-brimmed hat to cover your ears, neck, and face from the strong rays of the sun.
  • Thermal hat for warmth: You will need a warm fleece or woolen hat to keep you warm in cold temperatures, especially during freezing nights and cold Himalayan mornings.
  • Buff : At high altitudes, the air is dry and cold. A buff is an essential piece of gear to keep your neck warm and cover your mouth. It will help in protecting you against dryness as well as dust. It protects you from coughing and damaging your throat and lungs.

Body Wear:

Short Polypropylene sleeve shirts: Moisture-wicking fabric, Lightweight and good for hiking at lower elevations. Nylon or synthetic fabrics are the best.

  • Long Sleeve Shirts: Moisture-wicking fabric, long-sleeved shirts for higher elevation. Breathable, and fabric shirts will be best. Avoid cotton shirts. We recommend Merino wool or synthetic fabrics.
  • Lightweight Thermal Tops:  To keep your body warm and protect from the deep cold of the mountain. Fleece and wind stopper jacket or pullover.

Pants/Trousers

  • Hiking Pants: We recommend bringing one or two pairs of trekking pants that are quick-drying and made of synthetic material. The type that can be zipped off into shorts can be helpful. You will need to have one waterproof pants that can be worn over your trekking pants in case of rain/heavy snow.
  • Fleece Pant: When you arrive at your camp (lodge), you will want to change into a fresh pair of clothing. We recommend a pair of warm fleece pants or tracksuit pants.

  • Fleece or Woolen Pants: We recommend Merino Wool base layers or a synthetic material that will work as well. You will want one pair of warm bottoms to wear under your trekking pants on cold days.
  • Undergarments: Plenty of comfortable undergarments as per gender Moisture-wicking fabric

Down Jacket (Puffer Jacket)

A down jacket is a versatile and warm piece of clothing that is commonly used in trekking and is most effective when used as a mid-layer or outer layer in cold weather. Consider the layering system and pack other appropriate layers such as base layers, fleece jackets, or a waterproof shell to adjust to changing conditions. Remember to choose a down jacket that fits you well and allows for easy movement. Prioritize your comfort, warmth, and safety when selecting a down jacket for your trekking adventure.

You need waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex or similar waterproofing material as an outerwear jacket. This should be lightweight with a hood that will help protect you from rain/snow and help block the wind.

Hand-wear

  • Light Gloves: You feel comfortable with a thin liner glove for lower temperatures or to wear inside your thick outer gloves for extreme temps. having liner gloves helps to keep your hands warm at all times.
  • Warm Gloves (waterproof recommended): Gloves are an essential item to consider when packing for trekking, especially in colder climates or high-altitude treks At high altitudes and in cold weather conditions, Keeping your hands warm is also vital in making sure you have a comfortable adventure and preventing frostbites

Ensure you choose gloves that fit well and allow for comfortable movement. Gloves that are too tight may restrict circulation, while those that are too loose may not provide sufficient warmth. Consider trying on different sizes and styles to find the right fit for your hands. It's often a good idea to pack an extra pair of gloves in case of unexpected circumstances, such as getting wet or losing a glove.

Ensure that you break in your new footwear before the trek to avoid discomfort or blisters during your journey.

  • Hiking Shoes: Trail Runners shoes for shorter treks on well-established trails in milder conditions, trail running shoes can be a viable option. They offer a lightweight and agile design but may provide less ankle support and protection compared to boots or hiking shoes.
  • Camp Shoes: Camp shoes worn around camp after a day of trekking. The primary purpose of camp shoes is to give your feet a break from the rigors of trekking boots or shoes.    They provide comfort and allow your feet to breathe while you relax at camp
  • Socks: Your footwear with moisture-wicking and comfortable hiking socks made of wool or synthetic materials. Avoid cotton socks, as they tend to retain moisture and can lead to blisters. You need plenty of thin liners and thick socks you have less chance for laundry while in the mountains.
  • Gaiters : (Optional but helpful in muddy or snowy conditions) These are optional and only required during winter and rainy seasons. These can stop scree/mud/snow from getting into your boots.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is difficult level of Ghorepani poon hill trek?

The difficulty level of the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is generally considered easy. The trek involves hiking through varying terrain, including uphill climbs and descents, stone steps, and occasional steep sections. Altitude can also be a factor, reaching up to about 3,210 meters (10,531 feet) at Poon Hill for this trek with proper preparation and pacing, however, it's a rewarding adventure accessible to many hikers. Ghorepani Poonhill Trek is for beginners and fresher to train beforehand other challenging and adventurous trekking trips in Nepal like Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Everest Base Camp Trek and Manaslu Circuit Trek.  Actually, beginners first go to Ghorepani-Poonhill to train and to get some basic experiences of hiking and trekking and then only dare to go for other strenuous trekking trips in Nepal. Even the people who are doing Annapurna Base Camp Trek go through Poonhill ahead of ABC Trek. Some people still choose to do Trek to ABC via Jhino Danda directly without ascending Poonhill. However, it is recommended to do Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poonhill.

How difficult is Annapurna Base Camp trek?

The Annapurna Base Camp trek is considered moderately challenging. It involves hiking through diverse terrain, including forests, terraced fields, and high-altitude landscapes. The trek includes steep ascents and descents, as well as sections of rocky and uneven trails. Altitude sickness can be a concern as the trail reaches heights of over 4,000 meters (13,000 feet). While it's manageable for those with a moderate level of fitness and trekking experience, proper preparation and acclimatization are essential for a safe and enjoyable journey.

What is the different between Poon hill and Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

Poon Hill Trek: The Poon Hill trek typically focuses on reaching Poon Hill (3,210 meters), offering panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek: The Annapurna Base Camp trek takes you to the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, culminating at the base camp (4,130 meters) surrounded by towering peaks.

Which is harder Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp ?

Comparing Everest Base Camp (EBC) and Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) treks, Everest Base Camp is generally considered more challenging. The EBC trek involves higher altitudes, reaching over 5,300 meters (17,500 feet), and longer durations of hiking. Additionally, the weather conditions in the Everest region can be more unpredictable, and the trails may be more crowded. Annapurna Base Camp trek, while still moderately challenging, typically involves lower altitudes and shorter hiking days compared to Everest Base Camp.
