Is Manaslu harder than Everest ?

The Manaslu Circuit and the Everest Base Camp (EBC) treks are two of the famous Himalayan adventure treks; they differ considerably in both difficulty and terrain, just as much as in better amenities.

Trek Path Condition: Manaslu Circuit is more remote and rough with narrow, steep routes, and occasional sections where landslides occur. Comparatively, the EBC route has a better path, wider paths, and better-maintained routes because it is so much more popular and well-maintained.

Hardest Part:

The most difficult part of the Manaslu Circuit is crossing the 5,106m Larkya La Pass, which requires a long and exhausting day beginning in pre-dawn darkness (at 3 am) on steep, icy slopes. For the EBC trek, the most demanding is the hike up Kala Patthar (5,545m), although it's shorter.

Highest Elevation:

EBC reaches higher at the endpoint of Kala Patthar (5,545m) than the Larkya La Pass, thus altitude becomes a more major concern for trekkers.

Facilities and Accommodation:

Whereas Manaslu Circuit has basic teahouses with very few options, EBC has a much more comfortable lodge and, quite often, with Wi-Fi, heating, and different menus.

Even the trekkers can enjoy a luxury accommodations and modern meals items on Everest Base Camp Trekking trail especially in Namche and Dingboche.

Transportation:

Manaslu trekking begins with driving to Soti KholaMachhakhola, usually long and bumpy  off road drive for 8-9 hours , whereas the EBC starts with an exciting flight to Lukla or a drive for 4-5 hours to Ramechhap and then a short flight of 25 minbutes to Lukla airport. Thus, this saves time but with risks involved in bad weather conditions in Lukla airport.

Food and Accommodation:

While both treks depend on teahouses, the volume of tourism at EBC assures much better food and comfort options. Manaslu's more remote lodges usually provide very basic meals such as dal bhat, lentil soups, noodles, braed items, vegetable curries etc.

Manaslu is harder due to its remoteness, basic facilities, and rugged trails, while EBC offers a slightly easier, more comfortable experience for the trekkers.

Manaslu Circuit Trek vs Everest Base Camp Trek

The Manaslu Circuit Trek and Everest Base Camp Trek are two of the most iconic and most classical trekking routes for trekking in Nepal, yet they offer very different experiences.

Highest Elevation:

Manaslu Circuit: The highest point of Manaslu Circui Trek is Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters (16,929 feet).

Everest Base Camp: The highest point of Everest Base Camp Trek is is Everest Base Camp (5,364m) and Kalapattar(5545m).

Facilities

Manaslu Circuit: This is a less developed trek compared to Everest; there are fewer tea houses, and the ones that exist are more rustic. You may encounter very basic facilities along the route at local lodges run by local people.

Everest Base Camp: The trail is highly developed for tourism with well-established tea houses, better infrastructure, and more accessible services like Wi-Fi and electricity in most places.

Mountain Views:

Manaslu Circuit: The Manaslu Circuit trek offers astonishing views of Manaslu (8,163 m), Himalchuli (7,893 m), and the Ganesh Himal range. The Manaslu route provides a more secluded, less crowded experience with stunning panoramic views.

Everest Base Camp: The EBC trek is renowned for spectacular views of Mount Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam. You’ll see some of the world's highest peaks up close from Kalapattar and Everest Base Camp.

Trekking Trails:

Manaslu Circuit: Manaslu Circuit Trekking is a diversified trail that circumnavigates the Manaslu massif, covering a wide range of landscapes from subtropical forests to high-altitude desert. It's more rugged and remote.

Annapurna Conservation Area and local Manaslu Local Area protect the Manaslu Circuit Trekking trail.

Everest Base Camp: The Everest trekking trail follows the famous Khumbu Valley with scenic routes, passing through Sagarmatha National Park, Sherpa villages like Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche.

Sagarmatha National Park and Local Khumbu Region protect Everest Base Camp Trekking trail.

Level of Difficulty:

Manaslu Circuit: Manaslu Circuit Trek is, generally, considered more challenging than EBC Trek due to the rugged terrain, higher altitude, and the strenuous Larkya La Pass(5160m) crossing.

Everest Base Camp: While still demanding, the trek is considered easier in comparison to Manaslu Circuit, with well-trodden paths and more gradual acclimatization.

Starting and Ending Points:

Manaslu Circuit:  Manaslu Circuit Trek commences in Soti Khola/ Machhakhola-reachable by jeep or bus from Kathmandu-and ends in Besisahar, from where one can catch a bus/ jeep/ car back to Kathmandu.

Everest Base Camp: The starting point of the trek is Lukla (flown from Kathmandu) and the end point as well.

Transportation:

Manaslu Circuit: Access to the Manaslu Circuit is by jeep or bus from Kathmandu to Soti Khola/ Machhakhola.  From Dharapani,Jeep to Besisahar and then connect by bus/jeep/car to Kathmandu.

Everest Base Camp: Fly to Lukla from Kathmandu directly or via Ramechhap after 4 hours drive from Kathmandu to Manthali, one of the world's most famous airports, then trek into Everest Base Camp and kalapattar.

Precisely, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is more distant and difficult because of not having many facilities and including rugged terrain; meanwhile, the Everest Base Camp offers easier accessibility with better developmental facilities and a closer contact with Everest.

Also for the rescue purposes, Everest region is easier to get access than Manaslu region.

Is Manaslu Circuit harder than the Everest Base Camp?

In most circles, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is more difficult than the Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek, because of various factors like related to the remoteness of the area, challenging landscapes, longer distances, and strenuous altitude challenges. A few comparisons are given here with specific examples:

Trekking in Remote Areas:

Manaslu Circuit lies in a more remote and less-developed area when compared to the Everest Base Camp trek. While EBC is quite well-trodden and supported with a robust infrastructure for trekkers, the Manaslu Circuit still retains its isolation and a less commercialized feel. The Manaslu Circuit trek will be more rugged, and there will be fewer guesthouses; thus, accessing amenities can be more challenging. For example, the hike from Machhakhola to Lho Village-one of the first major stops-takes trekkers through dense forests, small villages, and relatively isolated communities, offering fewer comforts and luxuries and less frequent access to resupplies than EBC.

Steep Ups and Downs:

The Manaslu trek has been characterized by continuous steep ascents and descents all round the trek. For example, the Budi Gandaki River gorge is a section of beauty but also really demanding in nature, which requires trekkers to make steep climbs and descents on narrow, rocky trails with high cliffs. Also, the ascend to the top of Larkya La Pass(5160m), the trekkers have to encounter a steep climb for at least 4 hours to get the top of Larkya La which is really demanding.

In contrast, Everest Base Camp Trek, while still challenging, tends to have a less aggressive elevation profile and more gradual climbs, especially in areas such as Namche Bazaar and Tengboche.

Trekking Distance and Hours:

The Manaslu Circuit is longer and takes more time on the trail each day. While most EBC treks take 12-14 days, most Manaslu treks take 14-18 days since it is longer and has more strenuous climbs. Certain days, such as from Bimthang to Dharapani, require an 8-9-hour hike in challenging terrain, which is more demanding compared to daily trek duration in EBC.

Larkya La Pass:

The most significant of differences between Manaslu Circuit and Everest Base Camp is the 5,160-meter (16,929 feet) Larkya La Pass, considered one of the highest trekking passes in the world. This pass is one of the major challenges that the trekkers have to go through, as they will be ascending steep, rocky terrain and facing unpredictable weather conditions.

In contrast, the highest point of the EBC trek, Kala Patthar (5,550 meters), is a relatively short out-and-back hike from Kalapattar compared to Larkya La, part of a long day's trek through challenging terrain.

Transportation:

While both Manaslu Circuit and EBC treks can be accessed by local buses or jeeps, access to the Manaslu Circuit is more limited and decidedly less comfortable. For instance, going from Kathmandu to Machhakhola requires taking a public bus/jeep, which usually means it's long and bumpy, often taking upwards of 8-10 hours.

For the EBC trek, there's the option to have a relatively easier flight directly to Lukla or via Ramechhap after 4 hours drive from Kathmandu, after which they take a considerably smaller walk to Namche Bazaar, thus spending lesser time traveling to the start of their treks.

Preparations

Physical Conditioning: Endurance training and hill climbing need to be done due to the longer duration, higher altitude, and steeper terrain; loaded backpack hikes and longer day treks will more effectively simulate both Manaslu and Everest routes.

Altitude Acclimatization: Both treks reach altitudes where altitude sickness is a concern means above 5000m. However, the Larkya La Pass(5160m) in Manaslu presents a higher risk due to the steep ascents. Slower, more methodical acclimatization (at least one day at Samagaon) and extra rest days are important on the Manaslu trek.

Pack Appropriately: Manaslu is less supported by infrastructures and less facilities, so bringing your own food and comprehensive trekking gear might be necessary.

On the EBC trek, accommodations are more frequent and better supported with luxury lodges and restaurants, though it's still essential to carry some emergency supplies by helicopter and local muses and yaks.

Both Manaslu Circuit and Everest Base Camp treks are magnificent, but Manaslu Circuit is a more physically demanding and adventurous journey, suited to trekkers looking for a true wilderness and adventure experience for the lifetime.

How to prepare for Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek requires proper planning and preparation considering the challenging terrain and high altitudes like Larkya La Pass(5160m). Specific preparations are highlighted here.

1. Physical Fitness Training

Why: The hike involves steep ascents and descents with varying altitudes - up to 5,160m/16,930ft ( Larkya La Pass), hence it is bound to be really exhausting and requires stamina gains.

How: Incorporate cardio in your routine: hiking, running, or cycling. Strengthen your legs and core muscles too, and learn to do uphill walking with a packed backpack at least 10 kgs.

2. Altitude Acclimatization

Why: The Manaslu Circuit trek reaches high altitudes, and proper acclimatization is vital to avoid Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

How: Make time for gradual elevation gain and include rest days in the higher villages of Samagaun and Samdo. Keep hydrated and avoid alcohol or extreme exertion during ascents especiall above Samagaon.

3. Gear and Clothing

Why: The weather can vary and unpredictable, with temperatures ranging from freezing at night to warm during the day. Proper and winder range of gear is crucial for comfort and safety.

How: Invest in high-quality clothing such as waterproof jackets, thermal layers, gloves, and a warm sleeping bag. Also, bring trekking poles, reliable trekking boots, and a reliable headlamp.

4.Permits and Documentation

Why: The Manaslu Circuit Trek requires multiple permits due to its location near the Tibetan border.

How: Obtain MCAP for the Manaslu Conservation Area, ACAP for the Annapurna Conservation Area, Local Manaslu Area Entry Permit and RAP ( Restricted Area Permit) from a trekking agency or government office.

5. Mental Preparation

Why: The trek is physically demanding, and mental toughness is key to managing long days of walking and tough weather.

How: Create a positive mindset by being more mindful or visualizing the successful completion of some of the most difficult sections of the trek. Keep your mind centered on the journey, not on the obstacles. Practice some yoga and meditation classes focusing on your self-confidence.

6. Emergency Preparedness

Why: The remote nature of the Manaslu trek means access to medical help can be limited and hard to find

How: Carry a first-aid kit, be aware of the symptoms of AMS, and make sure you have emergency evacuation coverage or arrangements like a comprehensive travel insurance for altitude-related problems.

5.By following these preparations, you'll increase your chances of a successful and safe Manaslu Circuit trek having the most astonishing adventure for the lifetime.

How to prepare for Everest Base Camp Trek?

The EBC Trek demands attention in terms of preparation concerning physical conditioning and some degree of logistical planning.

How to prepare for the EBC Trek:

Physical Conditioning

Cardiovascular Endurance: Regular aerobic exercise like jogging, cycling, outdoor sports or swimming for 30-45 minutes, 3-4 times per week. For instance, the underlying 6-week training focused on enhancing stamina with interval training will help simulate conditions a trekker may experience.

Strength Training: Legs, core, and upper body. Lunges, squats, step-ups, and planking will help you get ready for uneven terrain and long ascents.

Climbing stairs with a loaded backpack can be a great practice for your Ebc trek.

Hiking Practice: Trek with a weighted backpack, aiming for 5-10 miles per hike to mimic trail conditions.

Altitude Training:

Simulate Altitude: Wherever possible, hiking or running in high-altitude areas is highly effective. Otherwise, an altitude training mask or training at higher elevations will increase your body's acclimatization.

Acclimatization Days: You will take several days at higher altitudes where you rest while trekking. You can plan your trek to take rest days ( one at Namche and the other at Dingbcohe), which diminish the chances of getting altitude sickness.

Gear Preparation:

Footwear: Sturdy trekking boots, well broken in. Example: Many trekkers found, after hiking the Appalachian Trail, that their boots were much more comfortable after 50+ miles of break-in time.

Clothing Layering System: Base layers that wick away moisture, insulating layers such as fleece, and waterproof outer layers for changing weather conditions.

Equipment: Sleeping bag rated to -20°C, trekking poles, headlamps, first aid kit, hydration system.

Mental Preparation:

Expect Mental Challenges: Physically, this trek may be very demanding; hence, you are going to feel tired, uncomfortable, and homesick. Get to know the route, keep positive, and try to develop resilience.

Permits & Logistics:

Trekking Permits: Get all necessary permits, such as the TIMS card, Local Khumbu Area Entry Permit and Sagarmatha National Park permit.

Travel Insurance: Make sure it covers emergency evacuation and medical expenses, as high-altitude travel is included in the trek especially in Everest Base Camp and Kalapattar.

With these preparations, one will be set to go for any challenge that the Everest Base Camp Trek may mean.

Final Words

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is undoubtedly harder compared to Everest Base Camp due to the remote nature of the track, higher mountain passes, and less accessibility. With Everest Base Camp, established trails, abundant teahouses, and regular trekkers are very much guaranteed; in stark contrast, the Manaslu Circuit Trek pushes its adventurers deeper into isolated terrain with a little less in terms of infrastructure. Crossing the Larkya La Pass at 5,167 meters is considerably more strenuous than reaching Everest Base Camp as it involves longer ascents, steep descents, and unpredictable weather. Besides, Manaslu also often requires better stamina and balance on its rugged trails compared to the relatively stable paths in the Everest region.

Regarding both treks, proper preparation is paramount: physical fitness training, including cardiovascular and strength-building exercises, is essential. Basic equipment such as layered clothes and good boots, combined with proper acclimatization schedules, are essential for safe and enjoyable experiences. For the ultimate in an off-the-beaten-track experience, there is Manaslu.
