Commercial Helicopter Flight in Everest Region Resumes

Commercial Helicopter Flight in Everest Region Resumes as usual after the formal decision made by Sagramatha National Park in the joint meeting between helicopters authorities and the officials of the national park. Actually, at the meeting held on 10th December, 2024, the Sagarmatha National Park had decided to ban on commercial helicopter flights in Khumbu region. 

The major reasons to ban on commercial helicopter flight in Everest region were: disturbing the wild animals, spoiling the serene atmosphere of Sagarmatha National Park and snatching the job opportunities of local people in the region. 

But, because of the pressure from the helicopter operators, the Sagarmatha National Park has knelt down and again has agreed to resume all kinds of commercial helicopter flights in Everest region from the month of January, 2025. It was supposed to ban on this commercial flight to Everest region from the first of January, 2025. 

Another major reason to ban on the commercial helicopter flight in Everest region was the issue of helicopter scam. The guides would encourage the trekkers who were doing Everest Base Camp Trek to fly by helicopter from Everest Base Camp or from Kalapattar back to Lukla and they would collect some profit through trekking company and the trekker would claim the insurance from their Insurance company. So, the international Travel Insurance companies doubted on this issues and they limited the budget of rescue claim and increased the deposit as travel insurance those who are preparing a trekking trip in Nepal.

The local people whoa re working as guide and porter serving the trekkers on the Everest Base Camp Trekking Trail and the animals like snow leopard and other species of birds might have been happy with the decision of banning on commercial helicopter flights in Everest region with irritating noise all the time and huge trash in Lobuche, Kalapattar and Everest Base Camp, but, again the choppers are ready to spoil their natural habitats and natural way of life of the locals. 

However, every mode of helicopter tours to Everest region including Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour and the regular rescue flights by helicopters will be operated as usual in the past for Everest region. 

Those who are preparing and doing Everest Base Camp Trek and any other adventure activities in Khumbu region can get every kind of helicopter services they want 1st January, 2025 afterwards. 

Final Words

Though the declaration has made made by CAN (Civil Aviation Nepal) that the commercial helicopter flights will resume soon, the local Khumbu government and Sagarmatha National Authorities  have not agreed with this immediate decision made by CAN.

This is uncertain about the resumption of regular commercial helicopter in Everest region as the battle between CAN and local Khumbu government and Sagarmatha National Park seems to go undecided for a long time.
