Commercial Helicopter Flight in Everest Region is banned from the first of January, 2025 which was declared by the joint meeting held on 10th December, 2024, by Khumbu Local Government and Sagarmatha National Park.

The government of Nepal has already informed all the helicopter companies who are operating commercial flights not to organize any commercial helicopter flights in Everest region from January 01, 2025. 

The helicopters can only be used for rescue and for carrying goods in Everest region from other major cities like Kathmandu. 

Ban on Commercial Helicopter Flights around Everest Region

Flights by commercial helicopters are banned in the Everest area because of a host of environmental, economic, and ethical concerns. First, these disturb the fragile ecosystem of Sagarmatha National Park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The jarring roar of the rotors bothers the habitats of snow leopards and Himalayan thar and also damaged the delicate alpine flora unique to this region.

The continuous helicopter traffic disturbed the tranquility of the trekkers, which compromised the very essence of adventure in the Everest region.

By not allowing commercial flights, authorities, Khumbu Local Government, Nepal Government and Sagarmatha National Park want to preserve the region's natural beauty, reinstate economic balance for local communities, and ensure that tourism in Everest is at a sustainable level.

Is Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour possible? 

Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour from Kathmandu is not possible after 1st January, 2025. The local Khumbu government and Sagamatha National Park has jointly announced that there won’t be any commercial helicopter flight from 1st January, 2025. 

However, rescue flight to Everest Base Camp and back to Kathmandu or Lukla in case of emergency is always open to the trekkers who are doing Everest Base Camp Trek or any other activities in Everest region. 

Since Everest Base Camp Helicopter tour is a commercial flight, it is not allowed. No people and no helicopter companies can do Everest Helicopter Tour in Nepal from 1st of January, 2025.

Is rescue helicopter available in Everest Region? 

Yes, in the Everest Region, there are rescue helicopters, guides, or other tourists when incidents like altitude sickness or an injury during Everest trekking and any other adventure activities like climbing may occur. They operate these through private companies, needing assistance from your guide or a trekking agency. 

Nonetheless, the helicopter flights not allowed for commercial purposes such as sightseeing or Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tours. Trekkers ought to make sure that travel insurance covers helicopter rescue in areas of remote mountains like in Everest Base Camp Trek.

For what purposes can the helicopters be used in Everest region?

Actually, the local people  of Khumbu region has long been complaining about stopping/banning unethical helicopter flights in Everest region because the helicopters had taken their job opportunities away from them and it threatened the entire livelihood of the local people who are residing in Everest region.
